Why can't garlic reduce acidity in the stomach since it is alkaline which is the opposite of acid?

By the time turmeric and ginger begin to break down in the stomach and intestine (on the guna, virya, vipak levels), they no longer carry any antibacterial effect. This is why turmeric and ginger are not considered antibiotics, but onion and garlic can be because their antibacterial effect continues further in the digestive tract. A large meal often triggers acidity more often than not. What happens if when your stomach is full, there is a greater chance that the stomach acids can be pushed back up the oesophagus which will trigger reflux, indigestion, stomach spasms and discomfort. Instead, eat smaller portions but at regular intervals to prevent acidity.

I too am allergic to penicillin and sulfa and have experienced eczema as a young child. I mention this to an Italian friend of mine whose family owned a restaurant. She too has a girl like intolerance and told me that her mother left one crumb of garlic in their sauce she would be ill.

Eat three meals, and two mini-meals, at regular intervals between 7am and 7.30pm. This ensures you don’t overeat and allows the stomach three hours to digest before lying down, avoiding night-time reflux. Often, someone with these symptoms won’t realise they have reflux because the oesophageal tissues have likely been exposed to acid for so long, they’ve been numbed to its effects. Indigestion, known as dyspepsia also, is a general term for pain or discomfort felt after meals in the stomach region, associated with difficulty in digesting food.

Crazy that so many people are suffering also. I’m half did and Italian not begin to notice problems until several years ago.

Certain foods and drinks can also exacerbate aid reflux, although there is still a fair bit of controversy in the medical community over which foods can cause or worsen reflux symptoms – largely because this seems to vary significantly between individuals. However, the LOS is a muscle, and like other muscles, its tone can vary. Acid reflux occurs when the LOS becomes abnormally relaxed, and allows the backward flow of the stomach contents back into the oesophagus. My severe bloating paired with my inability to properly digest food caused such intense acid reflux that I was unable to take deep inhales without experiencing a coughing fit. If your stomach hurts when eating garlic, it is likely you will react similarly to other fructan-containing foods also.

  • Buttermilk is a typical refreshing and healthy drink that’s used extensively to aid in digestion in many countries, including Germany and India.
  • Symptoms of acid reflux range from heartburn to difficulty swallowing – or there can be no symptoms at all.
  • I try to avoid garlic but if I happen to eat some I feel so bad, that even though I already know it’s because of garlic, I think it might be some kind of inflammation in my intestine.
  • Sometimes it’s only noted on package labels as a flavoring and not listed by name.

I recommend making your own or buying Rejuvenative Foods. As awareness of these important vegetables has grown, you can find great fermented vegetable options near you.

For years I too started with a garlic intolerance not knowing what it was because it occurred after eating chow mein as well until Chef friend told me that some chow mein can contain garlic I asked a friend of mine who owns a Chinese restaurant and she confirmed this now I have to ask for no garlic in chow mein.

People with acid reflux may notice their symptoms acting up after their morning coffee. This is because caffeine is a known trigger of acid reflux. If you have severe acid reflux, it’s best to avoid eating a lot of garlic, especially in raw form. If you don’t want to give up garlic, work with your doctor to determine whether this is an
