Too Many Babies Receive Acid Reflux Meds, Says Doc

Tube feedings

Very few babies (less than 5%) with reflux have any ongoing symptoms by the time they are around one year old. With excessive vomiting, babies can have difficulty gaining weight. Frequent regurgitation of stomach acid can occasionally cause trauma to the oesophagus.

In babies, these factors are not there. They lie down most of the time, consume only liquid, their muscles are not yet as well developed as they will become, and their oesophagus is still relatively short. As a result, babies are far more likely to have some degree of regurgitation of their milk. Gastro-oesophageal reflux is a condition that affects up to half of all babies under three months of age.

Just don’t make it too tight, as you don’t want to press on baby’s tummy too much, especially if you’re on shirt #5 for the day! You can also walk around while wearing baby.

Similarly, reducing the volume of feeds might reduce reflux, but may also impact on the nutrition and growth of a baby. The number of feeds in a day may need to be increased if the volume of each feed is reduced. Every two weeks, stop the treatment to see if your baby’s reflux is getting better (NICE 2015b) . If your baby is still having problems after a couple of months of having an antacid, go back to your doctor (Rosen et al 2018) .

It help me tremendously when I was about to go crazy. All my friends had babies at the same time, but no one experienced my troubles, so they did not understand.

Doctors caring for 162 infants with marked crying after eating gave half the babies a powerful antacid; the rest got a placebo. What happened? Fifty percent of babies got better on the medicine…but 50% got better on the placebo, too. I tried to wean him off a couple weeks ago, and any time that he would seem extra fussy – maybe because the reflux was aggitating him, I’d give him some Mommy’s Bliss gripe water. My friend who had two GERD babies told me that she can always tell when a mom has a reflux baby by the wild, desperate look in her eye. My son had really bad reflux & we gave him Prevacid. It helped, but I spent endless data dealing w/ a screaming baby. He never slept!

If you’ve tried the changes above and your baby’s symptoms are still severe, causing irritability, no weight gain and consistent vomiting, medication may help. Your pediatrician may prescribe infant doses of proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) or H2 blockers to reduce the amount of acid in the stomach.
