HCL sounds scary so I dont want to try that right away. I’m 65 1/2 years old and I have been on an acid blocking drug for almost 37 years; because at the time they put me on it I was overweight and was having severe heartburn and nothing was helping the heartburn.
My GI doctor is useless. Only wants to prescribe PPIs (which do not help with nausea, at least not in my case).
When you have acid reflux/heartburn, it is not too much stomach acid causing the direct problem. It is your stomach acid coming up through your esophagus when a muscular valve, called the lower esophageal valve, relaxes incorrectly and allows the acid in your stomach to flow backwards. It can also be caused by undigested food-due to low stomach acid-coming back up through the valve into your esophagus.
– If you have low stomach acid and you can’t supplement with Betaine HCL, there’s a few natural methods to help with symptoms. Start by taking a shot of lemon juice or vinegar before a meal to help the symptoms of indigestion.
What Is Hypochlorhydria?
Also follow their recommended dosage guidelines. As always, when trying a new substance start with lowest dose to make sure you’re comfortable with its effects before taking higher dosages.
I was diagnosed with the really early stages of Barretts. Once I saw a natropathic doc, he introduced me to betaine hcl and things got back to normal. I have been taking 7x650mg at breakfast and dinner and had my 2 year endoscope today and was told the Barretts looks ok (no progression) but I have an ulcer that they want me to go back on Prilosec 2x a day 20mg for 8 weeks and come back. Needless to say, I do not want to go this route so I was curious what your thoughts were if I should stop the betaine hcl and pepsin and/or start the prilosec?
While some populaces may require higher dosage of Betaine HCL, others may demand lower dosage of Betaine HCL. Therefore identification of proper dose consulting with your health service provider is necessary to avail the actual benefits of intake of Betaine HCL supplements. Another aspect which must be discussed hereafter that you must follow the same dose of Betaine HCL after every meal to pave the path of body’s natural process.
An acidic stomach is very important for both healthy digestion and immunity (1, 2). For the record, Betaine HCl should not be confused with betaine anhydrous. Betaine anhydrous is a drug that is FDA-approved to treat homocystinuria and potentially liver disease. A quick search on the web shows several good companies selling Betaine HCL, including Enzymedica, Source Naturals Now Foods, etc. Capsule sizes are varied – 500mg, 648mg, etc., so check with the source.
It is not uncommon to see PPI-induced hypochlorhydria in patients on long-term PPIs. The “HCL Challenge” followed by supplementation (HCL/betaine/pepsin) is usually well tolerated and when used appropriately can stabilize physiological processes, support nutrient assimilation, and aid in the digestion of proteins (providing amino acids and preventing food allergies). It also helps prevent pathogenic infections through a restoration of a more normal GI microbiome.
The solution would be incorporation of digestive bitters which may seem to be safe for your health as well as it will have the capability of restoring natural stomach acid reproduction. HCL supports healthy gastrointestinal microbe balance and immunity.
My number one irritating symptom is morning nausea. I don’t get it every morning, but when it’s present it grabs all of my attention, along with the coughing fits.
A weird pimply thing appeared on my face too but it’s not a pimple… I’m really enjoying the digestion benefits, I immediately felt HCL working but I’m a little nervous by these side effects. The only way to know the dosage you need for HCL is to test it yourself. Begin with the smallest dose and work your way up with each meal. When you feel a ‘warm” sensation in your stomach, reduce by one pill at the next meal.
My childhood was very stressful. Ive seen a doctor throughout the years.
What Is Betaine HCl And Does It Help With Digestion?
After doing some reading on what this condition is I’ve become very concerned about what it could lead to in the future. I’m 35 years old and don’t want to end up developing something more serious due to improper treatment. This article made a lot of sense to me.
They may recommend taking supplements or increasing dietary intake of these nutrients, especially once a person regains a regular level of stomach acid. Natural digestive enzymes are also available in health stores and drugstores.
