Sometimes acid reflux causes babies to throw up everything they’ve eaten. A baby who hasn’t had enough to eat will likely have trouble getting to sleep. Talk to your child’s pediatrician if you think acid reflux is causing your baby to have difficulty sleeping.

Now doctors can often fix a faulty valve with a nonsurgical outpatient procedure that involves stapling the valve with a device called the Plicator. In a scholarly study conducted at 15 centers across the country, 65 percent of patients treated with the Plicator had a major improvement in symptoms (and 62 percent no longer needed any medication)–comparable to the success rate of traditional surgery. Acid reflux is caused by stomach fluid, which contains strong digestive acids to break down food, ‘leaking out’ of the stomach and travelling up toward the oesophagus. In a scholarly study of heartburn patients at the Graduate Hospital, Philadelphia, doctors found that sleeping on the right side meant that leaked stomach acid took longer to drain out of the oesophagus compared to sleeping on the left, so those who slept on their right side suffered more discomfort.

Nicotine present in cigarettes weakens the valve which prevents the stomach acids from flowing into the oesophagus and gastrointestinal tract which causes reflux and heartburn. Kick the butt. It’s always a good idea. Our elders told us to chew our food thoroughly before ingesting it always.

Known as the recovery position because it’s similar to the posture used in medical emergencies, this can help reduce acid reflux and aid indigestion, says Professor Jim Horne of the Sleep Research Centre at Loughborough University. Very few babies (less than 5 per cent) with reflux have any ongoing symptoms by the time they are around one year old. Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) or heartburn is a common trigger for nausea and vomiting in pregnancy. Because of normal pregnancy changes, pregnant women are more likely to get heartburn if they have never had it before even.

Yes, we know that late-night snacking can become more frequent during pregnancy, as eating little and often can help keep nausea and sickness at bay during the first trimester, plus growing a baby can make you more hungry (it’s hard work, after all).

Avoid spicy foods and take over-the-counter antacids like Tums. If your heartburn persists beyond occasional doses of antacids, talk to your obstetric provider about starting an acid blocker medication which is safe in pregnancy. Raising the head of your infant’s crib can help relieve the symptoms of acid reflux also. You can do this by placing a towel underneath the head of the mattress. Because acid reflux occurs after meals, don’t put your infant to bed after a feeding immediately.

On the other hand, you eliminate the possibility of acidity to a large extent when you chew your food well and allow it to reach your stomach and intestines in a much more digestible form. Also, take care to finish your meals 2-3 hours before bedtime so your stomach gets ample time to carry out the digestive process and empty itself. A lot of people feel surprised to know that garlic is a great natural remedy in the treatment of indigestion. Garlic is actually a powerhouse of antioxidants which makes it a champion of heart health obviously, but it is equally powerful as an antidote to acidity too.

But a recent review of research at Stanford University questions whether restricting these foods and drinks really helps. “There’s currently not enough evidence that they make heartburn worse or that cutting them out will make it go away,” says gastroenterologist Lauren Gerson, M.D., lead researcher on the study and director of the university’s Esophageal and Small Bowel Disorder Center. Of course, if a certain kind of food seems to aggravate your symptoms, do try dropping it from your menu. And if your diet, whatever type, is causing you to put on pounds, losing weight should improve symptoms, says Dr. Gerson.

Fifteen patients dropped out of the study over that five-year period. To the FDA’s approval of the LINX device Prior, GERD patients who were dissatisfied with medication commonly turned to a procedure called Nissen fundoplication, which involves wrapping part of the stomach around the the lower esophageal sphincter to strengthen it and prevent acid regurgitation. That operation is good for patients with severe acid reflux, but it sometimes prevents patients from belching or vomiting, said C. Daniel Smith, an esophageal surgeon at Buckhead Surgical Associates, in the Atlanta area, and a medical director for TORAX Medical.

From heartburn to headaches and asthma: Is the way you sleep making you ill?

In another study, this one in The American Journal of Gastroenterology, scientists fed a group of chronic heartburn patients a high-fat dinner and a bedtime snack, then measured reflux as they slept. The right-side sleepers had greater acid levels and “esophageal acid clearance longer.” Other studies have had similar results. In a study in The Journal of Clinical Gastroenterology, scientists recruited a combined group of healthy subjects and fed them high-fat meals on different days to induce heartburn. Immediately after the meals, the subjects spent four hours lying on one side or the other as devices measured their esophageal acidity. Ultimately, the researchers found that “the total amount of reflux time was significantly greater” when the subjects lay on their right side.
