Although some people think belching can relieve acid reflux, it can actually make it worse. Although exercising a little after meals or eating more slowly can help with the immediate effects of gas caused by acid reflux, your best bet to stop burping is to directly treat your GERD. Many people experience heartburn symptoms at night, and they can be quite unpleasant and disruptive.
GERD (acid reflux) medications
A backsplash of stomach acid can sometimes get into the lungs, causing asthma-like symptoms. However, left untreated, the coughing and wheezing from heartburn can become triggers for asthma. The backwash of stomach acids can rise all the way to the back of your throat, resulting in a yucky bitter and sometimes sour taste in the mouth. You may also feel a burning sensation in your throat accompanying the funny taste in your mouth – another classic symptom of acid reflux. If your stomach starts paining right after a meal, you may be suffering from heartburn.
The second is abnormal relaxations of the LES, called transient LES relaxations. They are abnormal in that they do not accompany swallows and they last for a long time, up to several minutes. These prolonged relaxations allow reflux to occur more easily. The transient LES relaxations occur in patients with GERD most commonly after meals when the stomach is distended with food.
Since May 22, 2018, I went to the emergency room (ER) 13 times. I literally thought I was having a heart attack. It took 8 trips to the ER before I was told I have large hiatal hernia. My medicine was changed several times.

Symptoms of heartburn and GERD are a burning feeling in the chest, throat, or mouth, nausea, and more. Symptoms of a heart attack can often vary between males and females. Being able to spot the early signs means that prompt treatment can be sought. There are also risk factors, such as lifestyle choices, that can be avoided, although some, such as age, genetics, or medical history, may not be avoidable.
It’s considered erosive if an upper endoscopy shows breaks in the esophageal lining. It’s considered nonerosive if the lining looks normal.
Five different PPIs are approved for the treatment of GERD, including omeprazole (Prilosec, Dexilant), lansoprazole (Prevacid), rabeprazole (Aciphex), pantoprazole (Protonix), and esomeprazole (Nexium), and dexlansoprazole (Dexilant). A sixth PPI product consists of a combination of omeprazole and sodium bicarbonate (Zegerid). PPIs (except for Zegarid) are best taken an hour before meals. The reason for this timing is that the PPIs work best when the stomach is most actively producing acid, which occurs after meals. If the PPI is taken before the meal, it is at peak levels in the body after the meal when the acid is being made.
Lastly, pH testing can be used to evaluate patients prior to endoscopic or surgical treatment for GERD. As discussed above, some 20% of patients will have a decrease in their symptoms even though they don’t have GERD (the placebo effect).
GERD can also lead to chronic hoarseness, sleep disturbance, laryngitis, halitosis (bad breath), growths on the vocal cords, a feeling as if there is a lump in your throat, earaches, and dental problems. You probably already know that smoking is bad for your health. But did you know that smoking can contribute to heartburn?
Even though the reflux content is less acidic, it is still a bit too acidic, and over time it can have a mutagenic effect on the esophageal tissue. Since the patient doesn’t feel pain or discomfort, they do not report symptoms to their physician, who, therefore, is not alerted to test the individual for esophageal problems. This study shows that it is important for all individuals with GERD to have regular endoscopies to look for adenocarcinoma and Barrett’s esophagus, whether or not they are taking PPIs.
Do most people get heartburn?
I don’t get to sleep at night. I’m 25 years old and I just found out I have hiatal hernia.
Seek immediate medical help. Call 911. Any delay in getting help may be fatal. If your doctor says you have GERD, ask what you should do when you have chest pain. Acid reflux can be a painful problem to deal with that can result in long-term issues if not taken care of.
Another example is an individual who is exercising and experiencing chest discomfort and pain radiating to the arm; this scenario may appear to suggest a cardiac etiology, but exercise is also known to trigger reflux, which could result in reflux pain. Thus, physicians are increasingly relying less upon symptoms and more upon objective data. I have had a hiatal hernia for over 15 years. Nexium helped, but the insurance stopped paying for it.
This recommendation is particularly important if the regurgitation results in infections in the lungs or occurs at night when aspiration into the lungs is more likely. Patients also should consider surgery if they require large doses of PPI or multiple drugs to control their reflux.
An ultrasound test has been used in a small, select group of patients, not as a diagnostic test, but as a mechanistic test to understand the mechanism for pain. A research group from San Diego has shown that when patients experience chest pain, there is a significant shortening in the longitudinal muscle of the esophageal wall. Finally, anxiety or an underlying psychiatric disorder can manifest as chest pain in some individuals. Once a cardiac source of pain has been excluded, a variety of other sources should be considered, such as muscular skeletal or pulmonary causes. For example, an individual who is exercising after a period of physical inactivity may experience discomfort, heaviness, chest pain, and possibly even damage or trauma.
