Alcohol increases the production of stomach acid and also relaxes the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), allowing stomach contents to reflux back up into the esophagus. This is compounded if you have a hiatal hernia. If you still want to consume alcohol, you should learn how much and when to consume alcohol to decrease the chance it will cause heartburn. Most people refer to GERD as heartburn, although you can have it without heartburn. Sometimes GERD can cause serious complications including inflammation of the esophagus from stomach acid that causes bleeding or ulcers.
GERD Symptoms and Diagnosis
If it keeps happening, it’s called gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD). Of those who regularly experience heartburn, 20-40% are diagnosed with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), which is the most serious form of acid reflux. GERD is the most common digestive disorder in the US ( 3 ).
Treatment of acid reflux includes over-the-counter (OTC) medications including antacids and H2-blockers; prescription medications such as proton pump inhibitors, coating agents, and promotility agents; and in severe cases, surgery. Heartburn, or gastroesophageal reflux, occurs when stomach contents flow backward and upward into the esophagus. Licorice root is another folk remedy thatâ€™s been used to treat heartburn. Itâ€™s believed that it might help increase the mucous coating of your esophageal lining, which may protect your esophagus from damage caused by stomach acid. An upright posture puts less pressure on your lower esophageal sphincter (LES). Your LES is a ring of muscle that helps stop stomach acid from rising into your esophagus. People with acid reflux were once instructed to eliminate all but the blandest foods from their diets.

Some people develop Barretts esophagus, where cells in the esophageal lining take on an abnormal shape and color, which over time can lead to cancer. Also, studies have shown that asthma, chronic cough, and pulmonary fibrosis may be aggravated or even caused by GERD. The main symptoms are persistent heartburn and acid regurgitation. Some people have GERD without heartburn.

Growing evidence suggests that low-carb diets may relieve acid reflux symptoms. As mentioned earlier, this muscle prevents excessive amounts of stomach acid from leaking up into the esophagus. One step that will help minimize acid reflux is to avoid eating large meals. In people with acid reflux, this muscle is weakened or dysfunctional. Acid reflux can also occur when there is too much pressure on the muscle, causing acid to squeeze through the opening.
They are emptied from the empty stomach quickly, in less than an hour, and the acid then re-accumulates. The best way to take antacids, therefore, is approximately one hour after meals, which is just before the symptoms of reflux begin after a meal. Since the food from meals slows the emptying from the stomach, an antacid taken after a meal stays in the stomach longer and is effective longer.
Only if all else fails is surgery recommended. Because lifestyle changes and medications work well in most people, surgery is done on only a small number of people. Stand upright or sit up straight, maintain good posture. This helps food and acid pass through the stomach instead of backing up into the esophagus. Avoid fatty or greasy foods, chocolate, caffeine, mints or mint-flavored foods, spicy foods, citrus, and tomato-based foods.
The stomach acid that leaks into the oesophagus in people with GORD can damage the lining of the oesophagus (oesophagitis), which can cause ulcers to form. Avoid anything you think triggers your symptoms – common triggers include coffee, chocolate, tomatoes, alcohol, and fatty or spicy food. Normally, this ring of muscle opens to let food into your stomach and closes to stop stomach acid leaking back up into your oesophagus. If you also have asthma, the symptoms may get worse as a result of stomach acid irritating your airways.
It is too early to conclude, however, that seeing widening is specific enough to be confidently that GERD is present. Many nerves are in the lower esophagus. Some of these nerves are stimulated by the refluxed acid, and this stimulation results in pain (usually heartburn). Other nerves that are stimulated do not produce pain. Instead, they stimulate yet other nerves that provoke coughing.
It is debated whether or not a desire to be free of the need to take life-long drugs to prevent symptoms of GERD is by itself a satisfactory reason for having surgery. H2 antagonists are very good for relieving the symptoms of GERD, particularly heartburn. However, they are not very good for healing the inflammation (esophagitis) that may accompany GERD. In fact, they are used primarily for the treatment of heartburn in GERD that is not associated with inflammation or complications, such as erosions or ulcers, strictures, or Barrett’s esophagus.
