Underproduction of hydrochloric acid into the stomach is frequently encountered in subjects from developing countries. We explore the hypothesis that hypochlorhydria compromises the gastric barrier and favours bacterial overgrowth in the proximal parts of the small intestine where nutrient absorption takes place. Food calories are thus deviated into bacterial metabolism.
does this mean i dont actually have low acid? Thanks in advance! By the way i dont eat gluten, dairy, eggs, soy, coconut, peanut, Processed foods, food additives, etc.
I think the meat eating world are trying to fit answers around their chosen lifestyle. Most people’s heartburn and gerd is diet related. Many more have hernias likely than are diagnosed…and fatty foods are causing the sphincter to relax and release acid into the esophegus. I’m sorry if you addressed this already but I don’t have time to read through over 300 comments ?. Is it possible for the betaine HCl tablets to cause increased reflux, gas when you first start taking them?.
My doctor wants to do an edoscopy (or whatever it’s called) but I would prefer not to go through that. I spoke to my consultant about low stomach acid and he said it was not possible as I had had an endoscopy and this would have shown up.
In 2009, there were 110 million prescriptions filled for acid suppressing drugs! Would Mother Nature create a situation in which almost 1 out of 3 people created too much acid to be healthy? I don’t think so. If you’re someone who believes that you don’t like meat, I challenge you to test for low stomach acid, supplement with Betaine HCL, and regain your desire to eat meat again.

Insufficient stomach acid results in food remaining in the stomach too long and fermenting causing bloating which can force stomach acid back up into the esophagus through the lower esophageal sphincter. Stomach acid is important for all digestive functions and is also a defense against food-borne pathogens that may cause food poisoning.
The pain was greatly reduced, and I was able to eat a mostly normal diet. However, after that month I stopped taking the drugs and my stomach pain returned. I switched back to a bland diet and began taking DGL, Slippery Elm and Marshmallow Root for a couple of months. I just saw a gastroenterologist.
