ELI5: The saying goes “never add water to acid”. How come your stomach acid does not react when you drink water? : explainlikeimfive

– If you have low stomach acid and you can’t supplement with Betaine HCL, there’s a few natural methods to help with symptoms. Start by taking a shot of lemon juice or vinegar before a meal to help the symptoms of indigestion.

And high-fiber foods tend to take longer to eat and to be less “energy dense,” which means they have fewer calories for the same volume of food. You should also be warned that when you embark on a detox or cleanse, you may experience gas, bloating, unpleasant body odor, rash, hives or other unpleasant symptoms. If this happens to you, be sure to drink plenty of pure, filtered water, which will help you to flush toxins and prevent re-absorption of these compounds. Completely eliminate all processed foods like chips, crackers, cookies and candy, cut out anything that is non-organic, including non-organic meats, eggs, packaged foods, etc., cut out central nervous system stimulants like caffeine and alcohol and simply eat clean, real food.

There is a rumor that your stomach acid is so strong that it can dissolve a razor blade. I’d hate to be the guy to test that assumption, but it is true that the hydrochloric acid in your stomach is some strong stuff.

Well, the truth is that your stomach acid would happily digest your stomach if given a chance. And, when things don’t go right, we get things like ulcers, which are open sores or raw areas in the stomach. When this happens, it is because a large enough amount of acid has come into contact with the stomach wall on a regular enough basis.

And I haven’t eaten gluten for a year and a half. He does believe I have low stomach acid but doesn’t know the cause. I especially notice a lot of bloating with raw vegetables. I am sanjay 26 yrs from India.

– Dr. Wright notes in his book that “paradoxically adverse symptoms are most likely to occur in individuals with the lowest levels of stomach acid. This is because these people are most likely to have atrophic gastritis (a thinned-out stomach lining), which makes them much more sensitive to even small quantities of HCL than a normal, thicker stomach lining.” This makes sense because a super inflamed stomach lining won’t have its normal protective barrier intact to contain the strong acids. In this case, it is wise to start with digestive bitters or get smaller dose Betaine HCL pills (think 350mg or less). Betaine HCL increases the level of hydrochloric acid in the stomach necessary for proper digestion and assimilation of nutrients from food.

My guess is that the situation inside an actively secreting stomach lies somewhere between what occurred on my wrist and what happened to the Japanese factory worker who fell into a tank of hydrochloric acid seven feet deep. The case report states that his skin turned brown and the delicate tissue of his lungs and digestive organs underwent “dry coagulation necrosis.” Burning-whether from acid or from heat-denatures proteins. It changes their structure. It is denaturing that solidifies the boiling egg, that curdles milk, that distorts the burn victim’s skin. Inside a stomach, hydrochloric acid denatures edible proteins, making them easier for digestive enzymes to break down.

Also start with a few things that will help heal the stomach lining like Pepzin GI (zinc l-carnosine) and DGL. After awhile of those you could try digestive bitters working your way to Betaine HCL. Unfortunately apple cider vinegar isn’t going to actually help your health just cover up the pain. @ Debra – Nonsense there are no silly questions around this site! I’d love to help you overcome those problems. Here’s the thing enzymes are completely different from HCL.

The slight warmth in my upper chest after burping (after 4 tablets) did not replicate, and the symptoms of excessive burping has continued. I am now up to 13 tablets (which seems crazy) with no warmth, and no relief in burping symptoms.

Perhaps your head was spinning as you read through each of the 9 gut issues just described and thought “I have that! ”…”No wait…I have that! ”.

I have been on the auto-immune protocol diet for 5 weeks now, and have had great relief from all other digestive symptoms (flatulence), but I suspect my stomach acid was reallllly low. I have deep ridges in my fingernails, and have mineral deficient for ages. I have no doubt that once I get the stomach acid level right, everything will turn around. I know the burping could also be from SIBO, but because I clearly have such low stomach acid, and have trouble digesting fats, and am underweight at the moment, carbs are really important for me, so I can’t try the SCD at the moment… and thought I’d see first if supplementing with HCL would improve the symptoms.
