GERD Diet – Safe Foods and Drinks
They may cause an increase in pneumonia, in bloating, in overgrowth of bad bugs in your gut. They might also prevent mineral absorption.
If you don’t mind the change, make the transition from cow’s milk to goat milk. Goat milk is less taxing on the stomach and intestines than the milk produced by cows. The carbohydrates in refined foods – like chips, soda and white bread – move through your digestive system quickly, leading to symptoms like bloating, cramping and gas.

Vegetables. Select from the wide variety of vegetables. Avoid or reduce sauces or toppings that are high in fat or other irritants like tomatoes or onions. Treatment for GERD may include medications advised by your doctor and certain diet and lifestyle changes. A combination of approaches, and some trial and error, may be necessary.
This may allow stomach acid to escape into the esophagus and cause heartburn. In another study of approximately 400 people with heartburn, 73% experienced heartburn after drinking orange or grapefruit juice. The findings suggested that the amount of acid in citrus juices may have been responsible for causing heartburn symptoms ( 12 ).
It doesn’t matter how much acid there is in the stomach. Even a small amount can cause serious damage. Unlike the stomach, the lining of the esophagus has no protection against acid. For healthier meals, fewer calories, and less fat use healthy cooking methods like sautéing, grilling, roasting, braising, or baking.
They are more likely to consume triggering foods such as soda, liquor, and fried foods, compared to GERD-free controls. A validated food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) was administered to each of 308 GERD patients and 182 controls to assess dietary intake of GERD-triggering foods. Each subject also completed a validated GERD symptom survey and medical history. Acid-suppressing drugs are associated with many adverse effects, including an increased risk of fractures, intestinal dysbiosis, and kidney disease. There is a pressing need for nonpharmacologic GERD interventions, such as diet and lifestyle changes.

There’s no single recommended diet for people with acid reflux, because trigger foods differ from one person to another. Keep a journal of what foods you can eat without symptoms and those that aggravate or trigger your reflux symptoms.
Surgery is only necessary for very severe gerd not controlled with medication. Before surgery is considered it is important to confirm severe reflux with investigations such as pH monitoring or radiological studies. Also it is important to try an effective gerd diet and dietary regime. This may make surgery unnecessary.
Take enzymes with a meal, as recommended on the packaging. For fresh or dried papaya, a small portion should do the trick. My neighbor, Betty (of Betty’s Dill Pickles and Buttermilk Rye Bread), says that papaya enzymes worked great for her as an acid reflux remedy. After meals an infusion of fennel, dill or apple mint leaves will help to stop heartburn. One strategy that works for some sufferers is to avoid mixing carbohydrates and protein at the same meal.
