Chest pain

What are the complications of indigestion (dyspepsia)?

Symptoms of indigestion may be felt occasionally or as often as daily. If you have any pain that lasts for more than a few minutes or any warning signs of a heart attack, get medical help right away. Also get emergency help if you’re confused at all about whether your symptoms are from a heartburn or a heart attack.

(Intolerance to specific foods, for example, lactose intolerance [milk] and allergies to wheat, eggs, soy, and milk protein are not considered functional diseases like indigestion). The common placebo response in functional disorders such as indigestion also may explain the improvement of symptoms in some people with the elimination of specific foods. Patients with functional disorders, including indigestion, are frequently found to be suffering from depression and/or anxiety. It is unclear, however, if the depression and anxiety are the cause or the result of the functional disorders or are unrelated to these disorders. (Depression and anxiety are common and, therefore, their occurrence together with functional disorders may be coincidental.) Several clinical trials have shown that antidepressants are effective in IBS in relieving abdominal pain.

This never occurred in my chest and it didn’t hurt to breathe. I called the doctor the next day and said I still didn’t have any blisters, but the pain was still there. I took ibuprofen and slept for about couple of hours then I woke up with the sharp stabbing pain in the middle of my back on the left-hand side. The next morning, I went to the doctor, and he listened to my lungs and said they were clear. Reading the comments from others has very been interesting as I did not know that pleurisy often recurs.

If your indigestion symptoms are caused by an infection with H pylori bacteria, you will need to have treatment to clear the infection from your stomach. This should help relieve your indigestion, because the H pylori bacteria will no longer be increasing the amount of acid in your stomach.

If these don’t help, you may be able to try a proton pump inhibitor, which stops your stomach making acid. You can use over-the-counter proton pump inhibitors for four weeks – you’ll need to see your GP if you want to take these for longer than this. Always read the patient information leaflet that comes with your medicine. If you have any questions, ask your pharmacist for advice.

  • I fell a few weeks ago and started to have pain in my right flank a few days later.
  • A tumour in the pancreas can cause diabetes.
  • The main differences between these conditions is that chest pain caused by angina tends to be triggered by physical activity or emotional stress, and gets better with rest after a few minutes.

When it’s not indigestion

Treatment for indigestion (dyspepsia) will vary, depending on what is causing it and how severe your symptoms are. If your GP thinks that your indigestion symptoms may be caused by another underlying medical condition, you may need to have some further tests to rule this out. For most people, indigestion (dyspepsia) is mild and infrequent, and does not require treatment from a healthcare professional. Some people may get bouts of indigestion from helicobacter infection and, in these cases, getting rid of the bug with antibiotics (eradication) will help.

SR It is often difficult to distinguish between cardiac and esophageal causes of chest pain based upon symptom presentation alone because the nerves that supply the heart also supply the esophagus. Therefore, patients may think they are experiencing pain of a cardiac origin when the pain is, in fact, coming from the esophagus. Likewise, individuals who think that they are experiencing heartburn may actually be having a heart attack. Another example is an individual who is exercising and experiencing chest discomfort and pain radiating to the arm; this scenario may appear to suggest a cardiac etiology, but exercise is also known to trigger reflux, which could result in reflux pain. Thus, physicians are increasingly relying less upon symptoms and more upon objective data.

A peptic ulcer can be caused by Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) bacteria that sometimes live in your stomach. These bacteria can damage your stomach lining by increasing the amount of acid made in your stomach. See Diagnosis of indigestion for more information. If H. pylori bacterial infection is causing your indigestion (see Diagnosis of indigestion), your GP may recommend a mixture of medicines.
