Peppermint tablets contain two naturally-occurring antacids called calcium carbonate and magnesium carbonate which neutralise stomach acid by turning it in to water and other natural substances. They act directly in the oesophagus as well as in the stomach and are then eliminated by your body. Peppermint tablets work fast to relieve the symptoms of heartburn and indigestion.
In fact, according to US research, the majority of people with recurring heartburn don’t seek medical advice at all, self-treating the symptoms for years instead. This may also have had a significant effect in skewing data – the researchers note that women are more likely to seek medical attention than men, “resulting in the false impression that nonerosive reflux disease and functional heartburn are primarily female disorders”. Taking pain relievers such as ibuprofen, some muscle relaxers, or blood pressure medications can stimulate acid reflux. Acid reflux is the reverse passage of gastric contents into the oesophagus (‘food pipe’) which can cause heartburn.
Who shouldn’t take Rennie peppermint, ice or spearmint?
They’re ideal if you occasionally get stomach acid problems. You can get antacids from supermarkets and pharmacies. These procedures are done only as a last resort for treating acid reflux disease after medical treatment has proven to be inadequate. Rennie peppermint, Rennie spearmint and Rennie ice tablets all contain two active ingredients, calcium carbonate and magnesium carbonate.
For the acid produced by ants, known in many languages as “ant acid”, see Formic acid. The practical is most suitable for Key Stage 3, when discussing acids, alkalines and pH. It can also be used to explore the importance of preliminary work (pH changes are only obvious when the acid is added to the indigestion tablets, not the other way around). The understanding can then help when doing science course work. Antacids such as Gaviscon, which coats the stomach lining to stop acid rising, are worth trying also, or doctors can prescribe drugs to reduce stomach acid, which patients usually have to take for life.
It’s best to use antacids that contain both magnesium hydroxide and aluminum hydroxide. When combined, they might help counteract these gastrointestinal side effects.
The FDA has issued warnings and the NHS notes that prolonged use should be avoided. Some people find acid reflux is worse when they are stressed. Acid reflux happens when we eat certain foods normally. Fried or greasy foods, high fat meats and whole milk dairy products can cause the valve to relax.

- A medical doctor can often diagnose GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease) and heartburn by your description of the symptoms your experience.

However, the duration of treatment can hugely vary, and this is important as long-term PPI use is linked to side-effects including pneumonia, hypocalcaemia and Clostridium difficile infections (leading to severe diarrhoea). One study even made a link between PPI use and early death. Some PPIs are available over the counter, which has led to concern that – like antacids – they will be overused and under-monitored.

EndoscopyEndoscopy is a broad term used to described examining the inside of the body using an lighted, flexible instrument called an endoscope. Endoscopy procedure is performed on a patient to examine the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum; and look for causes of symptoms such as abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, difficulty swallowing, or intestinal bleeding. Indigestion is caused by excess acid in the stomach. Indigestion tablets neutralize some of this acid. This experiment shows how you can measure the amount of hydrochloric acid neutralised by one tablet.
It was like a toothless poodle trying to bite the ankle of an elephant. A friend who works in a lab told me about Zantac. Unlike Rennie and its ilk, which neutralises the acid in your system, Zantac inhibits the production of acid, cutting it off at the source. Excess stomach acid is not necessarily caused by indigestion, so antacids are not an appropriate treatment. Maybe I had been attacking what I thought was the problem in the wrong way.
Extra doses of two tablets can be taken if needed, in a day but do not take more than 10 tablets. Pay attention to what you’re drinking and eating before bedtime – alcohol can relax the oesophageal sphincter, which creates acid reflux. Try to avoid greasy foods, caffeine and fizzy drinks in the evening.
It contains two active ingredients, calcium carbonate and magnesium carbonate. They work by binding to and neutralising excess acid produced by the stomach, which helps to relieve stomach discomfort and pain.
